What would you say about another Ford Field home playoff game?
Following Green Bay's early Sunday triumph over Dallas, the No. 2 seed, and Detroit's easy 24-23 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, the Lions will face the Tampa Bay/Philadelphia winner in the Divisional round next Sunday at 3 p.m. at Ford Field.
Jared Goff, the quarterback for Detroit, and his team's offense lit the game on fire early and put a stop to it late. The Lions are making it to the Divisional round of the playoffs for the first time since 1991 in large part because of it.
Detroit took a 21-10 lead in the second quarter after scoring touchdowns on their opening three plays of the contest, all of which were 75-yard drives. Starting with a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Sam LaPorta, Goff completed 14 of 15 passes for 161 yards. Jahmyr Gibbs (10) and David Montgomery (1 yard) both found the end zone for Detroit.
Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Rams' offense were just as hot to start, scoring on their opening three possessions of the game as well on two Stafford touchdowns (50 & 38) and a Brett Maher 24-yard field goal.
At the half, Detroit was ahead 21–17.
Lions kicker Michael Badgley extended the lead to 24-17 with a 54-yard field goal after the defense forced the Rams' first punt of the game on their opening play of the second half. To make it 24–20, Maher answered with a 27-yard field goal.
Midway through the fourth quarter, another field goal by Maher gave the Rams a 24-23 lead; but, Detroit's defense came up big in the closing minutes, forcing a punt with four minutes left. For the final four minutes and seven seconds, Detroit's offense ran away with the victory. Goff iced it for Detroit with a first-down pass to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
QB Comparison:
Goff completed the game with a 121.8 passer rating, 22 of 27 completions for 277 yards, and a score. He also had no interceptions.
With a 120.9 rating, Stafford completed 25 of his 36 throws for 367 yards and two touchdowns. He also had no interceptions.
Big play:
With four minutes and twenty seconds remaining in the game, the Rams faced a third and fourteen at the Detroit 44-yard line as the Lions held onto a 24-23 lead. Detroit's defense came through as they frequently did in the second half, when cornerback Cam Sutton deflected a throw intended for Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua. It made the Rams punt, and LA was never able to recover the ball.
Key stat:
When it came to stopping three Rams field goals on drives that finished at the Detroit 6-yard, 9-yard, and 11-yard lines, Detroit's defense came through. Even though the Rams gained 425 yards overall, Detroit stopped them where it mattered most—in the red zone. The Lions ended with a 3-3 record, while the Rams were 0-3 in the red zone.
